DStv Decoder Types in Noordhoek: Which One Fits Your Home

HD, Explora, Explora Ultra or Streama? A plain comparison of DStv decoders for big Noordhoek homes, cottages and smallholdings.

On a Noordhoek smallholding the TV setup is rarely one box in one lounge. There is the main house, maybe a cottage for a parent, a teenager's room above the garage and a stable office. Choosing between the DStv decoder types sounds simple until you count the screens and remember the fibre drops out in winter storms. This is our plain comparison, decoder by decoder.

Quick answer

There are four main DStv decoder types: the HD single view (live TV only), the Explora (records), the Explora Ultra (records, 4K, built-in WiFi and apps) and the Streama (internet only, no dish). For most Noordhoek family homes, an Explora Ultra in the lounge plus an HD decoder in a second room on XtraView is the sweet spot.

The four DStv decoder types at a glance

Here is the short version before we look at each box. Prices are from DStv's January to April 2026 promotions and they move often, so treat them as a guide, not a quote.

Shops such as Pep, Game and Makro run their own specials, so compare on the day. Remember the box price usually excludes the dish, LNB, cable and fitting. Our breakdown of DStv installation cost in Noordhoek shows what the fitting side adds.

All current DStv decoder types play the new 2026 packages, so you do not need to swap boxes because of the September change. You can check current specs on the official DStv website.

HD decoder: the honest workhorse in Noordhoek

The HD decoder is the basic satellite box. It shows live channels in high definition and that is about it. There is no hard drive, so you cannot pause live TV or record the match while you are out on the trails.

Where an HD decoder makes sense

  • A guest cottage or granny flat where someone just wants the news and soapies.
  • A second TV linked to an Explora in XtraView, keeping costs down.
  • A rental or holiday let where simple is better than clever.

If you only ever watch live, an HD decoder will serve you well for years. Just be aware that on its own it cannot stream apps or catch up on missed shows. Of all the DStv decoder types, it is also the cheapest to fix or replace.

Recording DStv decoder types: Explora and Explora Ultra

These two DStv decoder types are the only ones with a hard drive. You can pause live TV, rewind, record a whole series and watch Catch Up shows. They also need a Smart LNB on the dish, because each box uses more than one tuner from a single cable.

The standard Explora

The Explora 3B is the mid-range choice at about R1,499 on promotion. It records in HD, connects to the internet for Catch Up and works in XtraView. For a family that wants to record kids' shows and the PSL, it does the job well. It does not do 4K, which matters less than you think on a TV smaller than about 55 inches.

Explora Ultra: what the extra money buys

The Explora Ultra is the top model. It handles 4K and HDR on a compatible TV, has built-in WiFi, runs streaming apps and records up to about 110 hours. It costs roughly double the standard Explora on promotion.

Is the Explora Ultra worth it? For the main lounge with a newer 4K TV, often yes. In a valley home where the router sits in the study, the built-in WiFi saves running a network cable to the TV unit. Our Explora installation in Noordhoek covers the Smart LNB, cabling and setup in one visit.

Good to know

Any PVR decoder, including both Explora models, comes with the DStv Access Fee of R125 a month at the time of writing. That fee also covers XtraView, so a second linked box adds nothing extra monthly.

Streama: the dish-free option

The Streama is a small streaming box. It plugs into your TV and your internet, with no dish, no LNB and no installation on the roof. You watch on a DStv Stream package, which is cheaper per month than satellite at the time of writing.

That sounds perfect, and for some homes it is. A student cottage in Sunnydale with strong fibre, or a tenant in Capri who cannot drill into the walls, will enjoy the Streama. The catch is that it lives and dies by your internet connection.

Good to know

Winter fronts, long WiFi runs to outbuildings and router power cuts during load shedding all stop a streaming box. If live sport matters, keep a satellite decoder on the main TV and use streaming as the backup, not the other way round.

Which DStv decoder types need a dish in Noordhoek?

Three of the four DStv decoder types do. The HD decoder, Explora and Explora Ultra all take the signal from a dish pointed north-east at the Intelsat 20 satellite. Only the Streama works without one.

In the Noordhoek valley the dish is the tricky part, not the decoder. Tall gums and pines, the shadow of Chapman's Peak and thatched roofs all affect where a dish can go. On a plot in Crofters Valley or Belvedere we often fix it to an outbuilding wall or a pole for a clearer view.

If your existing dish is still in good shape, you may only need the LNB swapped for an Explora. Our guide to the Smart LNB price for Noordhoek homes explains that upgrade and its cost. When the cable from the dish is old or soggy, read about DStv cable connections in Noordhoek before you plug in a new box.

Which DStv decoder for your type of Noordhoek home?

Here is how we usually match DStv decoder types to the house. It is a starting point, not a rule.

  • Family home in Lake Michelle or Noordhaven: Explora Ultra in the lounge, HD decoder in the main bedroom on XtraView.
  • Smallholding with a cottage: Explora in the house, HD decoder in the cottage, linked with a long, well-sealed cable run.
  • Single viewer or tenant: one HD decoder, or a Streama if the fibre is solid.
  • Holiday let: HD decoder on a simple package, so guests cannot rack up recordings.
  • Sports fan with a 4K TV: Explora Ultra, no question.

Technician tip

Before buying, count the TVs you want to run in two years, not today. Adding an Explora later usually means a Smart LNB and new cabling, so planning now can save you a second call-out.

XtraView and DStv decoder types in Noordhoek

XtraView links two or three satellite decoders on one subscription, and each TV can watch a different channel. All the dish-based boxes can join, from the HD decoder up. The boxes must stay connected so they can check in with each other, otherwise a linking error appears.

  1. Two HD decoders: one subscription plus one Access Fee.
  2. Explora plus HD decoder: one subscription and the Access Fee you already pay for the Explora.
  3. Three decoders: one subscription plus two Access Fees.

On a big plot the link between buildings is the weak spot, and our XtraView setup service in Noordhoek deals with it. We use outdoor-rated cable, sealed connectors and neat runs along fascias or through conduit, so the setup survives wet winters.

Getting your new decoder working

Once you have picked from the DStv decoder types, the box still needs a dish, a clean signal and activation. Our full DStv installation in Noordhoek covers all of that, including alignment on a signal meter.

For a deeper look at the recorder, see our page on Explora installation costs and steps in Noordhoek. A standard single-view install usually budgets about R850 to R1,400, while an Explora with a Smart LNB or long cable runs is roughly R1,500 to R2,400. We quote first.

DStv decoder types in Noordhoek: FAQs

What are the different DStv decoder types?

There are four main DStv decoder types in South Africa. The HD single view decoder shows live TV only. The Explora records and plays Catch Up. The Explora Ultra adds 4K, HDR, built-in WiFi and streaming apps. The Streama is an internet-only box with no dish. Older models still work but are no longer the ones on sale.

Which DStv decoder types suit a Noordhoek family home best?

For most family homes in Noordhoek, the Explora Ultra is the best main decoder. It records, works with 4K TVs and has built-in WiFi, which helps when the router is far from the lounge. Pair it with an HD decoder in a second room on XtraView. The second box adds no monthly fee because you already pay the Access Fee.

Which DStv decoder types can record?

Only the Explora and the Explora Ultra can record, because they have a built-in hard drive. The Explora Ultra records up to about 110 hours. The HD single view decoder and the Streama cannot record. Recording decoders come with the Access Fee of R125 a month at the time of writing, which also covers linking a second decoder.

How much are DStv decoder types in 2026?

During DStv's January to April 2026 promotions, the HD decoder was R499, or R799 with installation, the Explora 3B was R1,499 and the Explora Ultra was R2,999. Streama prices vary widely between shops. Prices have changed since, so compare on the day. The box price usually excludes the dish, LNB, cabling and fitting.

Can I use a Streama in Noordhoek instead of a dish?

Yes, if your internet is strong and steady. The Streama needs no dish or installation, so it suits tenants and cottages with good fibre. In the Noordhoek valley, winter storms, load shedding and weak WiFi in outbuildings can interrupt streaming. If live sport matters to you, a satellite decoder on the main TV is the safer choice.

Does an HD decoder work with XtraView?

Yes. An HD decoder can be linked to another HD decoder or to an Explora in XtraView. Both TVs can then watch different channels on one subscription. The decoders must stay connected to each other and to the dish. Two decoders cost one subscription plus one Access Fee, unless one of them is an Explora.
