Mounting a DStv Dish on a Thatched or Heritage Home in Noordhoek

Thatch, reed ceilings and old lime-plastered walls all rule out the standard fascia-bracket approach. Here is how it is done properly.

Noordhoek has more thatch per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in Cape Town. Around the Farm Village, along the wetland edge and up towards Chapman's Peak, thatched roofs and older lime-plastered cottages are the norm rather than the exception — and they need a completely different installation approach to a modern tiled house in Sun Valley.

Get it wrong and you do not just end up with a poor picture. You risk a roof penetration that voids an insurance policy, a water ingress path into reed ceiling boards, or an unsightly cable run across a facade that the homeowner has spent years restoring.

Why thatch changes the whole plan

A conventional installation bolts a bracket through the fascia or into the roof structure and runs the coaxial cable under the tiles. On a thatched roof, none of that is available:

  • You do not penetrate thatch. Any hole through the thatch layer is a water path and a long-term rot risk, and it interferes with the way the roof is designed to shed water. The national thatch construction standard and most insurers take a dim view of it, and rightly so.
  • There is rarely a fascia to work with. Thatch typically overhangs well past the wall line, so the usual mounting face simply is not there.
  • Cable entry has to happen somewhere else. Under the eaves, through a gable wall, or via an existing service penetration — never up through the roof covering.
  • Lightning and earthing matter more. Thatch fires are a real risk in the Deep South, and a metal dish on a high point needs to be bonded and earthed sensibly rather than left as an unattended conductor.

The four mounting options that actually work

1. Gable-end wall mount

Where a gable rises above the thatch line and faces roughly the right direction, a wall bracket bolted into sound masonry is usually the cleanest answer. It keeps the dish off the roof entirely, gives a short cable run into the ceiling void, and is easy to service later. On older homes we drill into the brick or stone course rather than into soft lime plaster, and use chemical anchors where the wall fabric is fragile.

2. Pole or ground mount

On single-storey thatched cottages with a lot of surrounding tree cover, a freestanding pole in the garden often beats any roof position. It clears the canopy, keeps the hardware away from the thatch completely, and can be sited behind a hedge or outbuilding so it disappears visually. The trade-off is a longer cable run — which is fine if it is buried in conduit and terminated properly.

3. Outbuilding or garage mount

Many Noordhoek properties have a flat-roofed garage, studio or store with a conventional roof structure. If it has line of sight, mounting there is often the least invasive option available: standard fixings, easy access for maintenance, and the main house untouched.

4. Chimney or existing structure mount

Where a sound masonry chimney rises clear of the thatch, a properly banded chimney mount is workable. It needs judgement: an old, unlined or cracked chimney is not a structure to hang a wind-loaded dish off, and we will say so rather than take the easy route.

Cabling a thatched or heritage home

Cable routing is where a lot of installations quietly go wrong. Our approach on these properties:

  • Enter the building through a wall, under an eave, or via an existing service penetration — never through the thatch.
  • Fit a drip loop at every entry point so water runs off the cable rather than following it inside.
  • Run cable in conduit or trunking where it crosses a visible facade, colour-matched where possible, and follow existing architectural lines rather than cutting diagonally across a wall.
  • Use quality RG6 coaxial with weatherproof F-connectors, because a hidden run in a thatched home is genuinely difficult to replace later.
  • Keep every joint accessible. Buried, sealed joints in an inaccessible ceiling void are a callout waiting to happen.
On heritage properties the best installation is the one you cannot see from the street. That takes planning before the first hole is drilled, not improvisation afterwards.

Heritage considerations around the valley

Older Noordhoek homes — particularly the werf-style properties and the cottages near the Farm Village — may sit under heritage constraints or homeowners' association aesthetic rules. Before we quote, we ask two questions: are there any restrictions on external fixtures, and is there a preferred elevation for services? A dish on a rear elevation with a slightly longer cable run is almost always the better outcome than a shorter run on the street facade.
