The South Peninsula gets two distinct beatings a year. In summer the South-Easter runs hard for days at a time and works fixings loose through sheer repetition. In winter the north-westerly fronts arrive with rain and gusts from the opposite direction, hitting the dish on a face it never sees in summer. Between them, they are the single biggest cause of DStv signal loss in Noordhoek, Kommetjie and Fish Hoek.
What wind actually does to a dish
A satellite dish is a wind-loaded surface on a lever arm. It does not usually fail dramatically. What happens instead is far more insidious:
- The azimuth creeps. Repeated loading walks the dish a degree or two off its bearing. That is enough to eat most of your signal margin without killing the picture entirely — so it looks like a weather problem, not an alignment problem.
- Bolts relax. Fixings that were torqued correctly on installation day lose tension over a season of vibration, especially on a bracket that was not rated for coastal conditions.
- The LNB rotates in its clamp. A few degrees of skew on the LNB costs signal quality on some transponders and not others, which is why certain channels break up while the rest look fine.
- Cable chafes. A run that moves against a brick edge in the wind will eventually wear through the outer sheath, and then moisture gets into the braid.
The symptoms, in order of how often we see them
- Picture pixelates in light rain but is fine in clear weather — classic loss of signal margin.
- Channels drop in the evening, especially in the higher-frequency range.
- An E48-32 error the morning after a windy night.
- Some channels perfect, others unwatchable — usually LNB skew.
- Signal that recovers when someone touches or leans on the dish — a loose fixing or a failing connector.

What you can safely check yourself
A short list, and the emphasis is on safely:
- Look, do not climb. From the ground, is the dish visibly sitting at a different angle to how you remember it? Is there obvious debris caught behind it?
- Check the cable at the wall entry. Cracked sheathing, green corrosion at a connector, or a run that has pulled tight are all worth reporting when you book.
- Restart the decoder once. It clears transient faults and costs nothing.
- Note when it fails. Time of day, weather, and which channels — this genuinely shortens the diagnostic visit.
Please do not realign it yourself
Aligning a dish by eye while someone watches the TV inside gets you a picture, not a margin. Without a meter you cannot see signal quality, only whether a channel currently locks — so a "successful" DIY realignment typically fails again with the first weather front. It also involves a ladder on a wet roof, which is how people get hurt.
Why signal strength is not the number that matters
Most decoders show a signal strength bar, and homeowners understandably use it as the score. It is misleading. Strength tells you roughly how much energy is arriving; quality tells you how cleanly the data can be decoded. It is entirely possible to have a strong, dirty signal that breaks up constantly, and a moderate, clean one that never misses a frame.
A professional realignment peaks both, with quality as the priority, and leaves a documented margin so the system rides through rain instead of falling over in it.
The pre-winter service that prevents most callouts
The most cost-effective thing a South Peninsula homeowner can do is have the installation checked once a year, ideally in autumn before the first front. A service visit covers:
- Re-torquing the mount and bracket fixings, and checking for corrosion at the mast.
- Re-peaking azimuth, elevation and LNB skew with a professional meter.
- Inspecting and, where needed, replacing weathered F-connectors and resealing entry points.
- Checking the cable run for chafe points and adding clips or conduit where it has been moving.
- Assessing LNB health — on a coastal installation five to seven years is a realistic service life.
An autumn service visit costs less than an emergency callout during a winter front, and it is a great deal more comfortable for everyone involved.
When realignment is not the answer
Occasionally we arrive, meter the system, and tell the homeowner that realigning will not hold. That is usually because of one of three things: the mounting position has been overgrown by tree canopy, the bracket is fixed to structure that cannot take the wind load, or the dish is in mountain shadow and was always marginal. In those cases we quote a relocation instead. It costs more once, rather than a realignment every season.
The same applies to homes where a light-duty bracket was fitted originally. Replacing it with a galvanised, coastal-rated mount is a one-time fix for a recurring problem.
